Breadmakers
Why did my bread not rise as much, at all or rise too much and fall?
When making bread, results will always vary. Below are reasons why bread may not rise as much, at all or rise too much and fall:
- Did you forget to put the yeast in? Put the correct amount of yeast in.
- Was your yeast old or past the expiration date? Check the dates on all yeast purchases and store yeast in refrigerator to make it last longer.
- Was the water too hot or too cold? Water should be room temperature.
- Did you measure your salt with a tablespoon instead of a teaspoon? Be careful when measuring - use the correct size of measuring instrument.
- Is your machine close to doors or windows? Keep away from doors and windows.
- Did you not put in enough sugar or liquid? If the bread does not have enough of these two ingredients, it may not have enough gluten to develop a strong rise. Increase the ratio of bread flour or add 1 1/2 teaspoons to 2 tablespoons of vital gluten.
- What type of flour was used and how was it measured? When making bread, bread flour should be used by measuring it in a measuring cup - being careful not to pack it in. Using old flour will also cause bread not to rise.
- Are you using quick rise yeast? When using this type of yeast, instead of Active Dry Yeast or Bread Machine Yeast, merely decrease the amount used. As a general guide, we recommend using 1/2 teaspoon of Fast-Rising yeast per cup of flour.
Example:
3 cups flour = 1 1/2 teaspoons Fast-Rising yeast - Are you experiencing Hot Weather/Cold Weather/High Humidity? Salt may be increased by 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon to keep the dough from rising too quickly and then falling.
- Still not rising? Increase yeast by 1/2 teaspoon or decrease salt by 1/4 teaspoon.
Helpful Hint:When putting in salt, sprinkle it around the sides of the bread pan so it does not touch the yeast.
Where can I get parts (bread pan, kneading blade, etc.) for my breadmaker?
I selected the "Wheat" setting, but my breadmaker isn't mixing. Why?
Some Oster® breadmakers have a Wheat delay time of 15 or 30 minutes. This delay allows for a period at the beginning of the cycle to "soften" the ingredients for better results. During the first 15 or 30 minutes, the machine does not mix, but the time will cycle down.
Why did my bread cave in or collapse (sunken top)?
There are several causes for bread to collapse or cave in (sunken top):
FIRST CAUSES:- Too much yeast
- Liquids are present
- There is not enough flour
- Temperature of the liquids is not correct
RECOMMENDATION:When correct salt and sugar amounts are used, a small increase of these two ingredients may be a remedy. Or, try reducing the water called for by 1/4 to 4 tablespoons.
SECOND CAUSES:- High humidity or high temperatures are present
RECOMMENDATION:At such time, add 1 to 2 tablespoons flour or decrease the liquid. A quick-rise yeast may have been used.
TIP:Too much yeast will cause the loaf to have a course, open grain and a flattened or sunken top.
Why did my bread turn out hard and not rise?
There are several reasons bread will turn out hard or will not rise:
CAUSES:
Yeast was not addedStale flour or stale yeast was usedExtra salt, sugar or hot liquids may have killed the yeast and inhibited risingOld flour was used
Still not rising?
Increase yeast by 1/2 teaspoon or decrease salt by 1/4 teaspoon.
Why can't I select a loaf size?
The loaf size option is not available when the following selections are made:
- ExpressBake® options
- Bake Only
- Dough Cycles
What are the tasks a breadmaker performs during a normal bread cycle?
When the breadmaker is operating, the machine performs the following tasks:
- First knead
- First rise
- Second rise
- Dough continues to rise
- Punch down
- Final rise
- Baking
*Times of each cycle may vary based on loaf size and cycle selection.
How do I bake at high altitudes?
If you live above 300 feet, you probably already know how to adjust other recipes like cakes and muffins. Higher altitudes tend to:
Make dough rise fasterMake flour dry
To compensate for high altitude baking, we recommend the following:Increase the amount of water to the recipe. Sometimes as much as 2 to 4 tablespoons per cup.
If the bread rises too high:Reduce the amount of yeast. For each teaspoon of yeast, try reducing the yeast by 1/8 or 1/4 teaspoon.Reducing the amount of sugar. For each tablespoon of sugar, reduce the amount by 1 to 2 teaspoons.
How do I test my yeast to see if it is still good?
To test your yeast to make sure it is still good, please see our yeast test below:
The following instructions can be used to determine the freshness and quality of your yeast. To test, follow these instructions: Place 1/2 cup of lukewarm water into a small bowl or cup. Stir 1 teaspoon of sugar into the water. Sprinkle 2 teaspoons of yeast over the surface. Place bowl or cup in a warm area and allow it to sit for 10 minutes undisturbed. The mixture should foam and produce a strong yeast aroma. If this does not occur, the yeast is inactive and stale and new yeast should be purchased.
How can I convert bread recipes to a breadmaker?
Oster® Breadmakers can be used with your own traditional bread recipes. You can convert any bread recipe to your bread machine if you do not exceed the recommended amount of flour listed below:
1 pound Loaf: No more than 2 cups1 1/2 pound Loaf: No more than 3 1/2 cups2 pound Loaf: No more than 4 cups2 1/2 pound Loaf: No more than 5 cups
*Results may vary when adjusting a recipe, feel free to experiment.
How can I get the kneading blade out of the bread pan?
If the kneading blade will not come out of the bread pan, try the following:
Soak in hot water for 10 to 15 minutes. While holding the wing nut, wiggle the kneading blade.Put vegetable oil on kneading blade shaft before attaching the kneading blade.
Why doesn't my breadmaker work or receive any power?
Breadmakers require 500 to 700 watts of power to use. The following are causes:
- Not plugged into a working outlet
- Plugged into an outlet with another high wattage appliance
- Breadmaker wasn't set properly
- Breadmaker lost power after programming or during operation
After reviewing the above causes of no power for breadmakers, we recommend you make one more attempt to operate the breadmaker before having it serviced at a
service center. Please do the following:
- Reset the unit, unplugging it from the wall outlet for 5 seconds
- Re-plug the unit into a working outlet
- Program the unit for basic white bread (be sure pan is in place)
- Start the white bread cycle
If all of the above has been checked and the breadmaker still will not power on,
please contact a service center.
What happens if the breadmaker bread pan non-stick coating is peeling off?
Each breadmaker pan has a non-stick coating that helps bread from sticking to the pan. The non-stick coating can peel when metal kitchen instruments are used.
Replacement pans can be obtained through a
service center.
Why does my breadmaker have E:EE in the display?
Some breadmakers will display E:EE. This means that the room temperature is too high to make bread (86oF or more). To reset the unit, press and hold the "Start/Stop" button. Place the bread maker in a cool location before using again.
What can I do if the bread sticks to the bread pan?
Sometimes, bread can stick inside the bread pan. Bellow are some recommendations:
- Hit the bottom of the pan hard two times.
- After you take the hot pan out of the machine, wrap it with a damp cloth. When it stops sizzling, the bread should slide out.
- While wearing hot mitts, turn the wing nut back and forth. Do not make a complete turn or it will make a whole in the bread or break the wing nut.
What is the difference between regular yeast and quick active yeast?
Quick rise yeast has an additional ingredient called Ascorbic Acid that enhances the rising time of yeast.
Why does my breadmaker have H:HH in the display?
Some breadmakers will display H:HH. This means that the bread maker must cool before you bake another loaf. To assist with the cool down, the breadmaker lid can be left open or removed to help cool the unit. Let the breadmaker cool about 15 minutes before baking another loaf.
Why doesn't the breadmaker pan come out? I can't get it out!
Sometimes the breadmaker pan will be engaged tighter than it was when placed into the breadmaker when cycles are started. This is caused during normal operation.
To get the pan out of the breadmaker, please follow these steps:
- Make sure breadmaker and pan is cool. If it is warm, please use an oven mitt.
- Grasp the handle of the bread pan and pull straight up or if your pan twists, twist pan clockwise and pull up. You may find a little force is needed to get the pan out.
Why didn't my ingredients mix?
Below are some reasons why the ingredients may not mix:
- Pan may not be in all the way
- Kneading blade may not be in the pan
- Bake ONLY was selected
- Power outage
- Wheat delay has been selected. Unit may have 15 to 30 minute delay before mixing.
If after reviewing the above causes the breadmaker will still not mix, the unit needs to be taken to a
service center.
My breadmaker has "ExpressBake®" options. What do I need to keep in mind when making bread with this cycle?
Things to Know about ExpressBake
® options.
There are a few things you should know about the ExpressBake
® settings that are different than the other settings:
- Breads made using ExpressBake® settings tend to have a darker, thicker crust than the other kinds of bread. Sometimes there will be a crack in the top of the crust. This is due to the higher temperatures used for baking. The loaves also tend to be shorter and denser.
- You CANNOT use the delay timer for the ExpressBake® settings. This would cool the liquid ingredients and affect the way the bread rises.
- You CANNOT use the crust color buttons when baking breads with ExpressBake® settings.
- DO NOT open the cover while baking breads with ExpressBake® settings.
- If the loaf is hard to remove from the pan, let it sit for about 5 minutes to cool. Shake the bread out of the pan and wait for 15 minutes before slicing.
- If you wish to bake another loaf of bread, you must let the breadmaker cool for 20 minutes with the cover open.
- YOU CAN use standard bread mixes when baking breads with ExpressBake® settings, but the results may not be as good as the results when using Oster® recipes within this book.
Why does my breadmaker have L:LL in the display?
Some breadmakers will display L:LL. This means that the room temperature is too low to make bread (59oF or less). To reset the unit, press and hold the "Start/Stop" button. Place the breadmaker in a warm room and allow it to warm up.

How long do Oster® filters last?
For Oster
® deep fryers that use replaceable filters, the filters should last about 6 months.
Replacement filters can be purchased through a
service center.
Why isn't my deep fryer reaching temperatures selected or heating?
Deep fryers will not heat or appear to be heating for the following reasons:
- Unit plug is not in a working outlet.
- Units with detachable plugs are not properly plugged into the back of the unit.
- Unit was not pre-heated for 25 to 30 minutes.
- Units with reset button need to be reset.
If all of the above have been checked and the deep fryer will still not reach proper temperatures after pre-heating for at least 30 minutes,
please contact a service center.
Why is my food soggy?
The reason that food remains soft after cooking is usually because of one of the following reasons:
- Too much food has been fried at the same time.
- Oil did not reach temperature needed for food being cooked.
- Food left sitting after frying.
How do I clean my deep fryer?
To clean the Deep Fryer, follow these directions:
- Prior to washing, wipe oil residue and food debris from cooking pot with paper towels.
- Wipe heater dry (if applicable) with paper towels until it is free from oily residue. Take care not to bend thermostat wires on heater.
- Wash the basket and cooking pot with warm, soapy water.
- DO NOT immerse the fryer in water under any circumstances.
- DO NOT use scrubbing brushes, chemical cleaners or any abrasive materials to clean the unit.
- When cleaning the lid, be sure to remove both filters (if applicable).
How much food can I put in my deep fryer basket?
The basket should not be filled more than 1/2 to 2/3 full (1/4 to 1/2 is best). If you fill the basket more than this, it would cause the temperature of the oil to decrease below the optimal frying temperature and result in foods that are not as light or crispy as they could be.
How long is the oil good for after using it the first time?
The cooking oil deteriorates after 5 or 6 fryings. The cooking oil should not be used if in storage for more than 2 weeks.
How long does the deep fryer take to reach desired temperatures?
Some Deep Fryers heat up faster than others, please see details below for pre-heating times:
Non-Immersion Element (No element in the Oil): 25 to 30 Minutes
Immersion Element (Element in the Oil): 7 to 10 Minutes
What types of oil can I use with my deep fryer?
You can use Olive Oil, Vegetable Oil or Peanut Oil. DO NOT USE Butter or Margarines because they will smoke excessively.
I have a result button on my deep fryer. How does it work?
There are times that an Immersion Element unit (Element in the Oil) will not operate. Simply follow the below resetting steps to make the deep fryer operational again:
- Unplug the unit from the wall electric outlet.
- Allow the unit to cool down.
- Check the oil level in your unit. If it is below the minimum level, oil should be added before resetting the unit and resuming cooking cycle.
- Remove the control box with heater.
- Use a narrow instrument such as a pencil tip or paper clip, press the recessed reset white button on the inside of the control box, located about midway between and behind the heat tubes. Push with enough force and you will hear the relay reset with an audible clicking sound.
- Replace the control box with heater onto the main body.

How do I clean my vegetable food steamer?
To clean the vegetable food steamer, please follow the steps below:
- Unplug cord from outlet. Before cleaning, allow Steamer to cool.
Never immerse the Base, Cord or Plug in water. - Empty the drip tray and the water reservoir. If there is a small amount of water remaining inside the water box, you can just turn the unit upside down and water will come out from the water inlet.
- Wash lid, steaming bowl, rice bowl and drip tray in hot, soapy water. Rinse and dry all parts, or wash on top rack of dishwasher.
- Clean reservoir with soapy water then wipe with damp cloth.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners.
- The lower steaming bowl and the rice bowl can be stored inside the upper steaming bowl with the lid on top.
- In hard water areas, the scale may build up in the heating element. If scale is allowed to accumulate, the steam could turn off before the food is cooked. So, after 7 to 10 uses, pour 3 cups clear vinegar into the water reservoir then fill with water up to the HI level. Do not place lid, steaming bowl, rice bowl and drip tray in this procedure.
- Plug in and set timer to 20 minutes. When the timer rings, unplug cord from outlet. Allow the unit to cool completely before emptying water reservoir. Use cold water to rinse the water reservoir several times.

please contact a service center.
Toasters
My toaster has a light above the lighter/darker knob. Why doesn't the light turn off?
It is normal for the light to remain lit constantly while the toaster is plugged in. Unplug the toaster to have the light turn off.
What is "Toast Logic® technology?"
Toast Logic® is a technology used in Oster® Toasters. It adjusts the toasting time to compensate for the toaster's temperature and voltage input during the toasting cycle.
Why is my toaster creating an odor?
During manufacturing, the toasting elements can have dust that needs to burn off before first using your toaster. Please follow the steps below:
- Without inserting any food into the bread slots, push the bread lever all the way down until it locks. (The cartridge will not lock if the toaster is not plugged into a power source.)
- The first toasting process will preheat the new elements and burn off any dust, which may have accumulated during storage. It is normal for this burn off to create an odor.
Your Oster
® toaster is now ready to use.
How do I clean my toaster?
To clean your toaster, please see below cleaning steps:
After use and before cleaning, unplug the toaster power cord from the power outlet and wait for the toaster to cool.
- Wipe the outside of the toaster with a damp cloth and then dry it with another cloth or paper towel. Do not use abrasive cleaners; they will damage the toaster's finish.
WARNING: Do not use any pointed or sharp articles for cleaning the inside of the toaster; this may damage the toaster.
- Lightly tap the side of the toaster to dislodge any crumbs caught in the toast chamber. Remove the crumb tray and empty it. Wipe the tray clean with a damp cloth or place it in the top rack of your dishwasher for cleaning. Be certain to put the crumb tray back into the toaster before using the toaster again.
WARNING: Empty the crumb tray frequently. Crumbs will accumulate in the crumb tray and could catch fire if not emptied periodically. Wipe the non-stick surface on the top of the bread slots with a damp cloth and dry it with another cloth or paper towel.
Why is my toast not toasted evenly?
If your toast is not toasting even, your toaster is in need of cleaning. Please see below cleaning steps:
After use and before cleaning, unplug the toaster power cord from the power outlet and wait for the toaster to cool.
- Wipe the outside of the toaster with a damp cloth and then dry it with another cloth or paper towel. Do not use abrasive cleaners; they will damage the toaster's finish.
WARNING: Do not use any pointed or sharp articles for cleaning the inside of the toaster; this may damage the toaster.

Why won't the latch stay down on my toaster?
If the latch on your toaster will not stay down, check the following:
- Is the toaster plugged into a working outlet? The toaster must be plugged in and have power running to it or the lever will not stay down.
If the above has been checked and the latch of the toaster will not stay down,
please contact a service center.
Does my toaster have Anti-Jam protection?
All toasters manufactured after November 2001 are equipped with the UL required Anti-Jam. What this means is that if a toasting product gets jammed, the toaster will shut off automatically.
My toaster has a bagel button. What does this button do?
The bagel button is used to toast items such as bagels or English muffins. Bagels and English muffins are thicker and take longer than regular bread to toast. When this feature is selected, the toaster will adjust the toasting time.
My toaster has a frozen button. What does this button do?
The frozen button is used for frozen toasting foods. When this feature is selected, the toaster will automatically defrost your food and then toast it in one easy step.
My toaster has a warm button. What does this button do?
The warm button is used for warming foods that have already been toasted that might have cooled. When this feature is selected, the toaster will warm your food without further toasting.
When I use my Oster® toaster (6320, 6321, & 6322), only the inner elements light up. Why?
These models of Oster® toasters have a special bagel toasting feature. When the bagel button is selected for models 6320, 6321, & 6322, the inside of the bagel will be toasted while the outside of the bagel will be warmed. The toaster will heat the center elements more than the outer elements and that may give the illusion that only the inner elements are working. This allows better toasting for bagels and English muffins.
Which setting should I select on my toaster?
When adjusting the lighter/darker setting, you can adjust how light and how dark the toaster toasts your food. Your selection should vary based on the moisture content, thickness of bread and your darkness preference. The setting will remain unless the toaster is unplugged or the settings are changed.
Wafflemakers
Why are my waffles sticking to the grids?
Below are some causes for waffles sticking to the grids of the waffle maker:
- Too much oil or a lack of oil.
- Batter may stick if there is no egg yolk in it; must have egg yolk or oil for non-stick.
- It is always recommended to spray a non-stick product on the plates. This helps reduce the chances of sticking.
