A toaster or convection oven isn't just for toasting bread and warming cold food. These compact appliances pack much of the power of a traditional range and make a number of creative, complex dishes. Rather than just relegating this versatile appliance to heating bagels and muffins, try some of these more adventurous recipes for snacks and meals.

1. Savory Brie Puff Pastry
This recipe is the perfect option if you're hosting a dinner party or small get-together and need every inch in the kitchen you can get. Rather than just putting out cold cheese and crackers because your oven is busy making dinner, use your toaster oven to cook up this delicious appetizer. Here's what you'll need:

  • 1/2 cup green olives
  • 1/2 cup parsley leaves
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 cup packed spinach leaves
  • 2 sheets of pastry
  • Brie
  • Your toaster oven
  • Your food processor

Peel the white layer off of your brie. Place one of your pastry sheets on baking sheet. Place your brie in the center of you pastry sheet. Separately take the olives, parsley, garlic, olive oil and spinach and add them to your food processor. Use your processor to finely chop these ingredients without turning them into a paste. Add this mix on top of the brie, cover with a second sheet of pastry and crimp the edges to close your snack. Cook in your toaster oven at 400 degrees for about 15 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm with crackers.

2. Shrimp Casserole
Casserole may make you think of a full size oven, but in reality you can make this family staple in your convection or toaster oven as well. All you need to do is follow this simple recipe and you'll have a fully cooked meal in less than 1 hour.

3. Crab Enchiladas
Similar to casserole, your toaster oven can help you make this classic dish as well. All you need to do is load up your soft tortillas with crab meat and other filling then cook in a casserole pan with enchilada sauce - it shouldn't take longer than 15 minutes for each batch.

4. Berry Cakes
Your toaster oven can do almost everything your regular oven can - and this includes making cake. Try making this almond flour cake in your toaster oven for a tasty sweet treat that won't monopolize the whole kitchen. Top it with a few fresh, seasonal berries.
