3 Savory Smoothie Recipes

Most people associate smoothies with sweet, creamy flavors like yogurt and fresh fruit. Although these tastes are common in many breakfast and post-workout smoothies, they're far from the only flavors you can make.

Try blending yourself one of these savory vegetable smoothies that are perfect for people who love the paleo diet, as well as anyone just looking to switch it up.

1. Spicy Green Smoothie
Skip the coffee and give yourself an early morning kick or afternoon pick-me-up with a spicy vegetable-filled smoothie. You can vary the amount of spiciness you add based on preference, but this recipe is a good base to work from. Here are the ingredients you'll need to get started:

  • 1 cup spinach
  • 1 cup kale
  • 1 large tomato
  • 1/2 cup chopped bell pepper
  • 1/2 avocado, peeled and pitted
  • 1 teaspoon chili pepper
  • A pinch of cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 jalapeno, sliced
  • 1 cup water
  • Ice.

Prep your vegetables by cutting, seeding, peeling or pitting, then place them all in your blender. Add ice or water as needed to get the consistency you desire. Blend on HIGH and serve with a stalk of celery. This smoothie may taste slightly like a Bloody Mary, but it's packed with far more nutrients and none of the alcohol.

2. All Green Smoothie
Many smoothies pair leafy greens like spinach or kale with sweet ingredients, but if you want to enjoy a savory smoothie you can keep the entire shake green. Gather these ingredients from your garden or local grocery store:

  • 1/2 cup kale
  • 1 cup spinach
  • 1/2 cup chard
  • 1/2 cucumber, chopped
  • 1/2 cup basil leafs
  • 1 shallot
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 dash salt
  • Ice.

Combine all of these ingredients in your all-purpose blender for a thick, green, earthy smoothie. The basil will have a strong flavor, but you'll be able to taste hints of each vegetable you've used. This smoothie can help you get all the vegetables you need in one small glass.

3. Fresh Herb Smoothie
Having a small herb garden either in your yard or kitchen can help you add fresh blasts of flavor to your favorite dishes as well as your smoothies. Use these homegrown herbs to blend a savory, tasty smoothie. Here's what you'll need:

  • 1 avocado, peeled and pitted
  • 1/2 cup parsley
  • 1/2 cup basil
  • 1 pinch rosemary
  • 1 pinch thyme
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 dash salt and pepper
  • 1 splash olive oil
  • Ice.

Just mix these ingredients in your blender and enjoy. This smoothie certainly isn't for everyone, but it can be a tasty option in small amounts when you're tired of just fruit and yogurt.
