March isn't just when spring begins - it's also National Peanut Butter Month! Peanut butter has become a staple in the American diet because of its delicious taste and nutritional benefits.

According to the National Peanut Board, this beloved treat may trace its roots all the way back to ancient times, when the Incas ground up the peanut into a butter-like substance. Modern peanut butter was invented more recently, around the turn of the 20th century. It was displayed at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair and used by doctors. They prescribed peanut butter to help elderly patients get their protein even if they couldn't chew. The U.S. military also took advantage of this food's protein levels by using peanut butter in soldiers' rations to help them keep energized during World War I and afterward, the NPB explained.

Two tablespoons of average peanut butter has 7 grams of protein, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That's about 14 percent of your recommended daily value of protein.

If you're looking to add a little extra protein to your diet or post-workout snacks, why not try a smoothie that packed with peanut butter and other nutritious ingredients? Here are a few tasty options you can make in your performance blender.

1. Liquid Peanut Butter and Jelly
It may not be as good as the PB&J sandwich you loved back in elementary school, but this smoothie is the next best thing and loaded with vitamins and minerals. You'll need:

  • 6 ounces Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 1/2 cup strawberries
  • 1/2 cup raspberries
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 3 tablespoons peanut butter
  • Ice.

Mix your ingredients together in your performance blender and blend on HIGH until your beverage is smooth enough to drink. You can use a frozen berry mix instead of fresh berries if preferred. You can also add sugar as desired to get a sweeter, jelly-like flavor.

2. Peanut Butter and Chocolate Smoothie
The only combination that rivals PB&J for deliciousness is peanut butter and chocolate, so why not combine them for a delicious protein shake? Gather your ingredients.

  • 1 banana
  • 3 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons chocolate sauce or powder
  • 2 cups low-fat milk
  • Ice

Combine and blend these ingredients in your performance blender until smooth. This simple, sweet smoothie is a great option for adding protein powder or other supplements to.

3. Creamy PB and Banana Protein Blast
Peanut butter isn't the only smoothie ingredient that has plenty of protein. This recipe has protein from the Greek yogurt and milk as well to help you build muscle and reach your daily value. It's a great option after a workout.

  • 2 bananas (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 cup low-fat milk
  • 6 ounces Greek yogurt
  • 3 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup blueberries

Blend these ingredients in your performance blender for a thick smoothie that you can enjoy for post-exercise or first thing in the morning.

4. Green PB Smoothie
Green smoothies are popular, but don't always feature as much protein as possible. Remedy this by adding a health dollop of peanut butter to your favorite kale, spinach or avocado green smoothie. The flavors mix perfectly and you'll have a full helping of vitamins and minerals with a large scoop.
