Irish Soda Bread Waffles
Irish soda bread has a long, proud history, with recipes for the bread passed down from generation to generation. Try a fun twist on the classic and make Irish soda bread waffles in your Oster® DuraCeramic™ Flip Waffle Maker.
- 1/4 cup golden raisins
- 1/4 cup currants
- 2 1/4 cup biscuit mix
- 1/2 tablespoon zest of an orange
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 teaspoons caraway seeds
- 3/4 cup buttermilk.
Place the raisins and currants in a small bowl. Cover the bowl with a warm, wet towel and allow to plump for a few minutes. In a large bowl, whisk together biscuit mix, orange zest, sugar, baking soda and caraway seeds. Add the buttermilk and honey and stir to combine. Next, drain the raisins and pat dry with a paper towel. Add the raisins and currants to the soda bread mix. Add half of the soda bread mixture into the waffle maker and close. Cook for 4-5 minutes, and flip halfway through to ensure even cooking. Repeat with the remaining soda bread mix. Serve with Irish butter on the side.
Lucky Green Waffles
Using food dye to change the color of waffles to a bright green hue will wow your kids and add a little extra fun to their St. Patrick's Day. This recipe uses a basic waffle recipe so you get all the classic flavor with a vibrant green makeover.
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 egg
- 1 cup skim milk
- 1 1/2 tablespoons melted butter
- Green food coloring.
Mix the flour, sugar and baking powder together in a bowl. Add the egg, skim milk and butter to a large bowl and stir well. Add the flour mix to the large bowl and mix together until the batter has small lumps. Add 12-15 drops of food coloring and stir well again until the batter is completely green. Add the batter to the waffle maker and close. Cook for 4-5 minutes, flipping halfway through cooking time. Plate and top with butter, then enjoy!
Chocolate Mint Waffles
Indulge a little on St. Patrick's Day morning with these delicious mint- and chocolate-packed waffles.
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 3/4 teaspoons baking powder
- 3/4 teaspoons baking soda
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons mint extract
- 1 egg
- 1 1/2 cups skim milk
- 3 tablespoons butter, melted
- Green food coloring
- Fresh mint for garnish.
In a bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cocoa powder. Then in another large bowl, combine the mint extract, egg, milk and butter. Add the dry ingredients to the large bowl and mix together until slight lumps form. Add 5-7 drops of food coloring for a light-green batter. Then, pour the batter into the waffle maker, close, and cook for 5-7 minutes, flipping halfway through. Top with a few sprigs of mint and serve.
