3 Unique Cakes to Bake for Your Next Celebration

Wow your guests the next time you're hosting by creating a unique, show-stopping cake. A decadent, picture-perfect cake adds an extra festive air to any celebration. However, making it can be much easier than it looks with the Oster® Planetary Stand Mixer, an essential tool for effortless preparation and culinary brilliance at home. 

Take basic cakes to the next level with these three unique cake recipes that are sure to impress:

1. Lavender Vanilla Cake 
Add a sophisticated touch to your soirees with this recipe for an elegant Vanilla Lavender Cake. Delicate lavender flavor, sweet vanilla and a whisper of lemon combine for a unique and party-perfect cake for everything from wedding showers to birthday parties. This recipe uses culinary lavender, a variety of the plant created specifically for cooking, which is safe to consume and can be found in many supermarkets. 


  • 3 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons vanilla extract 
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 tablespoon culinary lavender
  • 2 1/2 cups cake flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream 
  • 1/4 cup milk 
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice 
  • 2 cups confectioners' sugar 
  • 3 tablespoons water 

Heat oven to 350 degrees and grease a large cake pan. Mix the eggs and butter together using the Oster® Planetary Stand Mixer. Once combined, mix in the vanilla extract, followed by the sugar, adding it 2 tablespoons at a time. Mix until combined fully. Then beat in the flour, salt and baking soda until incorporated, followed by the cream, milk and 1 tablespoon of the lemon juice. Continue mixing until smooth. Pour batter into cake pan and bake for 1 hour or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. While the cake is baking, mix together the confectioner's sugar, the remaining lemon juice and water until it thickens in consistency. Once the cake is done baking, let cool on a wire rack, then drizzle with the icing. 

2. Italian Rum Cake 
This delicious cake is a surefire hit when it comes time to blow out the candles! Festive and rich, a creamy whipped topping and sweet fruit offset tangy rum flavor. You can easily create this show-stopping cake with the Oster® Planetary Stand Mixer. To make this cake, you bake three round cakes and then assemble them on top of one another - alternating with fruit and cream - then cover with frosting. Rich and indulgent, just watch the heads turn as you bring out this cake!



  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened 
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar 
  • 2 cups flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt 
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 
  • 6 eggs 
  • 3 tablespoons rum 
  • 2 tablespoons water 
  • 1 1/2 cups finely sliced strawberries 

Chocolate Cream

  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 
  • 2 cups milk 
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup baking chocolate, finely grated 

Whipped topping

  • 1/4 cup sugar 
  • 1/4 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 3 teaspoons corn syrup

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Begin by making the cake batter. Beat together the butter and sugar using the Oster® Planetary Stand Mixer. Fold in the flour, salt and vanilla, mixing to combine, then add in the eggs one at a time. Once fully combined, pour into a separate bowl. Next, make the chocolate cream filling by mixing together all ingredients in the Oster® Planetary Stand Mixer until smooth and the chocolate is evenly distributed and transfer to a separate bowl. Finally, create the whipped topping by mixing together all ingredients in the Oster® Planetary Stand Mixer, adding water if the mixture is too dry. Distribute the cake batter evenly into three shallow cake pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool on wire racks. In a small bowl, whisk together the rum and water. Brush the rum mixture on top of each cake layer. Spread chocolate cream on top of two of the cakes, then place strawberries on top. Stack the three cake layers on top of each other, then frost the top layer with the whipped frosting. Decorate with fresh strawberries and serve.

  • 2 3/4 cups cake flour 
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt 
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda 
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3 tablespoons lemon zest 
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 3 eggs 
  • 1/2 unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Lemon zest curls for garnish


  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream 
  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar 
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Using the Oster® Planetary Stand Mixer, mix together the flour, sugar, salt, baking soda, baking powder and lemon zest. Once combined, add in the lemon juice and eggs, adding the eggs one at a time, followed by the butter, vanilla and milk. Mix together until fully incorporated. Pour the batter into a greased cake pan and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Meanwhile, mix together the heavy cream, sugar and vanilla into soft peaks form to make the whipped topping. Let the cake cool on wire racks, then spread the whipped topping and sprinkle lemon zest curls on top before serving.
