Nutritious Green Smoothie Recipes for St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day isn't just a holiday to drink green beer and rich minty milkshakes. You can also celebrate these Irish festivities with a nutrient-rich smoothie that's as green as a shamrock. Try making one of these smoothies this St. Patrick's Day to take part in the celebration and eat right while you're doing it.

Killer Kiwi Smoothie
These cute green fruits are great if you're looking for a vitamin-filled snack and even better if you want to make a smoothie. Here's what you'll need for a fruity kiwi smoothie that's green enough for St. Patty's Day:

  • 2 peeled kiwis
  • 1/2 peeled lime
  • 1/2 cup almond milk
  • 1/2 cup natural apple juice
  • 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed
  • 1/2 banana.
captionKiwi can make cute garnishes as well.

Combine the kiwis, banana, lime, almond milk, juice and flaxseed in your performance blender after prepping and peeling. Mix on HIGH for about 30 to 45 seconds or until smooth and homogenous. You can replace the almond milk with ice and water for a lighter taste. With banana, kiwi and flax, you'll get a wide range of nutrients regardless. Garnish with a lime and kiwi wedge for some flair or take it in a sport bottle if you're on the go.

A True Shamrock Smoothie
If you were to really make a milkshake with shamrocks it wouldn't taste minty, but probably grassy and filled with vitamins, minerals and fiber. Try to make a more authentic "shamrock" smoothie by turning to leafy greens. Combine these vegetables and ingredients in your performance blender:

  • 1 cup loose spinach
  • 1 cup loose kale
  • 1/2 cup cucumber
  • 1 cup coconut water
  • 1/2 cup white grapes
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice.

This smoothie can range from sour to tart, so feel free to add some honey or agave nectar as needed. It's very green and loaded with an array of nutrients that you'll be hard-pressed to find elsewhere.

Creamy Avocado Smoothie
A simpler green smoothie option is the avocado smoothie. Mix 1 cup of low-fat milk, 1 pitted and peeled avocado and 1 banana with ice for a simply creamy smoothie that's filling and nutritious. Consider sipping on this drink in place of your next breakfast.

Refreshing Green Apple Smoothie
Use tart and sweet green apples for an extra juicy smoothie. Mix two cored and quartered apples with 1 cup vanilla yogurt, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 banana and a few drops of honey in your blender. Mix on HIGH with ice until it's smooth and ready to enjoy.
