Thank you for reaching out to Oster®. We value your continued support of our products and we are glad to assist you with your inquiry. Our products have lead content on their cords the reason why the California Proposition 65 Warning is present. The plastic coating on electrical wires and cables on many consumer products – such as the product you have purchased – may contain lead. Lead functions as a stabilizer that acts as an electrical insulator and helps prevent the plastic from becoming brittle or cracking. Therefore, many manufacturers of electrical products are placing Prop 65 warning labels for electrical cords on products where the electrical cord may be handled on a more frequent basis. However, please note that our products have gone through several lab tests to ensure that our products are far below the U.S. FDA and California Regulation Prop 65 requirements for extractable lead to ensure they are safe for consumers. No other state requires this labeling; it is a California-specific requirement. However, because it is very difficult to isolate products that will be shipped into California from those going to other states, we placed this label on every product sold, because this product is sold nationwide. Warnings will say: WARNING: This product contains chemicals, including lead, known to the State of California to cause [cancer, and] birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling. WARNING: Handling the cord on this product will expose you to lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause [cancer, and] birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling. WARNING: The power cord on this product contains lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause [cancer, and] birth defects or other reproductive harm.
